Properly installed plaster pool walls expand and contract as the ground settles and shifts. As the plaster ages, it loses its natural elasticity and small cracks begin to develop. Typically, these cracks are superficial. If you find small, hairline cracks, you can make the repairs yourself. Contact a pool professional if you notice larger cracks because they may affect the structural integrity of the swimming pool. Lower the water level in the pool to expose the cracks before you start to make it easier to make the repairs.

Remove any rough or loose particles from the edges of the cracks. Put on protective eye wear and use a hammer and chisel to tap away any flaking plaster at least 1/4 inch deep. Tap on both sides of the crack and listen for hollow sounds. If you hear hollowness, chip away the old, loose plaster until you get to solidly attached material. Use a damp sponge to clean away any debris that remains in the crack.

It's not uncommon for plastered pools to develop small, hairline cracks in the surface of the plaster, especially close to the surface, on the top steps for instance. Cracks that run deeper can be seen in the corners, or where a spa wall joins the pool wall, or may develop. Jun 15, 2016  We had our pool replastered in late September this year and now it appears to be developing cracks in the surface. They haven't broken through the plaster yet, but they appear as light colored interconnected spider-webbing lines that looks like a road map. The problem happens when impact or stress on the plaster allows the void to reach the pool surface via a small pinhole or hairline crack, which are caused when the delaminated plaster experiences structural flexing. These pinholes and hairline cracks allow water to get behind the pool’s plaster mass and dissolve calcium hydroxide. For deeper divots, cracks and other larger problems, I like to use Epoxy Patch for cracks, and pool plaster mix for deep divots or delaminations (previous plaster coat coming up). For shallow rough patches, it would be best to grind them down smooth (with a light touch), using a 7″ or 9″ grinder with a concrete disk, which can be rented for.

Stir 2 ounces of liquid cement bonder into 1 1/2 pounds of white pool plaster mix in a 5-gallon bucket. Stir in enough water to make the mixture look like mashed potatoes, using a trowel. If you need less plaster mixed, use less of each material proportionately. For example, if you need half that amount, use 1 ounce of liquid cement bonder and 3/4 pound of plaster mix.

3

Work the plaster into the cracked areas with your fingers. Use a back-and-forth motion perpendicular to the cracks to fill the cracks completely.

4

Apply heat to the plaster with an air gun or hair dryer. As the plaster dries, wipe off any excess plaster from the surface of the pool with a damp sponge. Working from the center of the patch outward, use the trowel to replicate the surrounding surface of the pool so that the patch becomes unnoticeable.

Things You Will Need

  • Eye protection
  • Hammer
  • Chisel
  • Sponge
  • Liquid cement bonder
  • Pool plaster mix
  • 5-gallon bucket
  • Trowel
  • Sponge
  • Heat gun or hair dryer

Tips

  • Fast-set and slow-set pool plaster repair products are available. The only difference between them is in how fast the repair sets up. If you don’t think you can work quickly enough, or if you have a longer hairline crack to repair, choose the slow-set product.
  • If you have colored plaster on the pool, add plaster color to the dry plaster mix before adding water.

Warnings

  • Use extreme caution when using electrical appliances near water. Only plug them into a ground fault circuit interrupter outlet. If you don’t want to use electrical appliances near water, let the plaster air dry a bit before working it with the trowel.
  • Put on eye protection when using a hammer and chisel.
